FOR FREEDOMS

For Freedoms is an artist-led organization that centers art as a catalyst for creative civic engagement, discourse, and direct action.

Founded in 2016 by a coalition of artists, including Hank Willis Thomas, Eric Gottesman, Michelle Woo, and Wyatt Gallery, For Freedoms is dedicated to fostering an environment of listening, healing, and justice through a wide range of creative activations.

Through its first monograph and greatly centered around the campaign WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE? — For Freedoms launched the For Freedoms Congress (FFCON) in Los Angeles and a nationwide arts campaign in 2024.

Where Do We Go From Here? is a celebration and reflection on For Freedoms since its inception in 2016. Over the past eight years, we have engaged thousands of artists and partners, produced hundreds of campaigns, public artworks, and activations, and sparked innumerable conversations about creative civic engagement. We are using 2024 as a moment to reflect on our journey so far, to better determine our future path. This year will encompass many of the traditional For Freedoms endeavors—Congress, billboard campaigns, nationwide programming, artist collaborations, and re-engaging much of our network—while also beginning to plant the seeds for what lies ahead.

It is a laboratory, an experiment, an undefined, infinite journey that galvanizes people around the upcoming elections and encourages the imagining of possible realities beyond them. Our medium is not only art, discourse, and activations, but also how we listen, collaborate, build community, and prioritize our individual healing so that we may contribute to the immense work of healing on a collective scale. How can we come together to imagine new equitable, just futures that hold love and care at their core? The world is in turmoil, and the foundation of the house we sit in was built on bigotry and injustice, this year we confront all of that head-on and come together to collectively consider:

Social media style guides were created for the templates which their social team used to display logos, typography, quotes and blurbs amongst the many artists, artwork and photography. It allowed for cohesion as the brand continues to carry out their misson of storytelling.

Social media style guides also led the social media team on title rules for how each billboard would be labeled to display the artist, artwork and location.

During the 2024 Campaign branding we were prompted to design a billboard alongside the many other artists invited in responding to this years assignment.

Our goal was to create something that felt a bit raw and unrefined. Our billboard resonated with the design and political visuals of the MLK JR. era, which the For Freedoms campaign of WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?was inspired by.

The MLK JR. we derive inspiration from not only spoke with his voice but through his actions. Every symbolic movement of notable gestures during his displays of activism and communication are largely displayed by his hands.
